CLIMB KILIMANJARO VIA MACHAME ROUTE

LADIES ONLY SPECIALS
CLIMB KILIMANJARO VIA MACHAME ROUTE

11 October 2008

Machame Route – benefits
1. Less utilized, more scenic route.
2. Circuit route – no backtracking on same route, or meeting climbers coming down from the top.
3. Longer time on mountain to acclimatise, therefore greater chance of reaching the summit.
4. Camping rather than sharing noisy huts with other climbers (two persons per tent)

Degree of difficulty: The main problems encountered are altitude sickness, which can be countered by use of medicines, and lack of oxygen. The standard route we take is a hike - no climbing as such. It is very cold - correct kit is a must - but our kit lists and hire equipment are top quality. Good preparation and advice, as well as good guides on the mountain, have given us an over 95% success rate (the average is 60%) - this type of thing is a "once in a lifetime" challenge, and must not be taken lightly. We ensure that all our climbers have all the facts - medical list, equipment list, etc, long before they travel - possibly the reason for our success rate. Any reasonably fit person who enjoys walking can reach the summit of Kilimanjaro. The youngest to make it was nine years old - the oldest seventy-nine.

DAY 1
Met on arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport, and transferred to Moshi, Keys Hotel. Stay here for 1 night on a bed and breakfast basis.

Climb briefing.

(Note – it is suggested that we have a “free day “ on arrival, and start climbing the next day – this can be discussed. We can also add in a day extra on the mountain if it is needed.)

DAY 2

Driven to park gate. A five hour walk through the spectacular forest will bring you to Machame Hut at 3 000 meters. Take your time walking through this section – it will help towards acclimatisation, it can often be muddy or wet as well. Overnight camping.

DAY 3

Ascend to Shira Hut, 3 800 meters. A short descent from Machame Hut followed by an hour or so of hard uphill to the top of the forest, then 2 hours at a more gentle angle through the lower moorlands brings one to the top of a rocky bluff. From here, start traversing westwards, up towards Shira Cathedral. Total walking time approximately 6 hours. Overnight camping.

DAY 4

Barranco Hut, 3 900 meters. From Shira Hut, climb slowly for about 5 km, through increasingly barren terrain, straight towards the cone of Kibo. Traverse across to Barranco Hut, before the Barranco wall. A fairly long and strenuous day, as the altitude is now beginning to be felt. Overnight camping.

DAY 5

Continue across to Barafu Hut, another long and tiring day. This is an acclimatisation day, as you ascend up sections of scree and rock, then down into valleys – a long hard day of walking at relatively high altitude. Overnight camping.

DAY 6

Early attempt on summit. You will be woken at approx. midnight for your final ascent. Dress warmly, and your guide will lead you 'pole pole' to Stella Point on the crater ridge, and then along the top to Uhuru Peak. It's a very long day - reaching the peak in the early morning light, and then descending during the day arriving at Mweka late afternoon. Overnight camping - Mweka.

DAY 7

Descend to park gate, approx. 4 hours steady downhill walk. Met and transferred to the Keys Hotel for overnight on a dinner, bed and continental breakfast basis.

DAY 8

Transferred to the airport for your onward flight or join a safari or beach stay on Zanzibar.
