South Africa has a wonderful road system which links all the major tourist attractions around the country. Hotels, Lodges and B&Bs are plentiful as are restaurants and garages.

Driving is on the left hand side of the road. An International Drivers License is required for Australian drivers. Maps and mobile phones are available.

“The World in One Country”. South Africa has beautiful vineyards, magnificent mountains, coastal scenery from beautiful Mediterranean style fishing ports to wonderful surfing beaches to match the best in Australia. Game reserves and huge National Parks complete the picture.

Climate
- a continually sunny climate means that it’s a pleasure to travel all year round. Mid-winter occurs in June and July, mid-summer in December and January.

holders.

SUGGESTED SELF DRIVE GARDEN ROUTE

DAY 1 - CAPE TOWN TO OUDTSHOORN
Today you will met by a representative who will assist you to collect your hire car and depart Cape Town via the N1 motorway, the Huguenot Tunnel and interesting "Route 62" through the Little Karoo to Oudtshoorn, the ostrich capital of the world. Overnight: Hlangana Lodge/similar

DAY 2 - OUDTSHOORN TO KNYSNA
Your journey will take you to George, which nestles below the Outeniqua Mountains. It is the sixth oldest town in South Africa. Drive from George to Knysna. This picturesque town is known as the Jewel of the Garden Route and lies on the banks of a shimmering lagoon. Knysna is synonymous with fine indigenous timbers; famed for the craftsmanship of its furniture and timber products. Overnight Knysna Quays (B)

DAY 3 - KNYSNA
Today you can travel to the up-market holiday town of Plettenberg Bay. Originally and rightly christened "Bahia Formosa" (Beautiful Bay) by early Portuguese explorers, it is home to the rare Knysna forest Elephant, delicate ecosystems in wetlands and lagoons, gigantic trees and a bay large enough for the great whales of the Southern Ocean to calve and protect their young. DAY 4 - KNYSNA TO PORT ELIZABETH VIA TSITSIKAMMA FOREST
Continue through to Port Elizabeth, set along the beautiful shores of Algoa Bay and better known as the Friendly City! After a short drive through the city, drop the rental vehicle at Port Elizabeth Airport. (B)

DAY 1 – PORT ELIZABETH OR KNYSNA TO SHAMWARI GAME RESERVE
Today continue from Knysna or Port Elizabeth to Shamwari Private Game Reserve. Overnight at Long Lee Manor (D)

DAY 2 – SHAMWARI GAME RESERVE
Enjoy all the activities that the lodge has to offer. Game viewing is carried out both morning and evening, when you are driven in your open vehicle over the rolling hills and valleys. In the early morning (if you are keen) you will leave before dawn, spending up to 3-4 hours spotting before returning to your lodge for breakfast. The heat of the day is usually spent in the shade, playing tennis, swimming, reading and, of course, enjoying a delicious lunch. Late afternoon you set off for the evening drive. As the animals emerge from their midday cover, you may see elephants browsing, rhino drinking at a waterhole, or perhaps the shy bushbuck motionless in the dense bushveld. At dusk, the Land Rover stops at some panoramic spot for a sundowner and snacks. Before returning to the lodge for dinner you have the opportunity for a night drive. DAY 3 – SHAMWARI GAME RESERVE TO PORT ELIZABETH
Depart Shamwari Private Game Reserve to Port Elizabeth, set along the beautiful shores of Algoa Bay and better known as the Friendly City! After a short drive through the city, drop the rental vehicle at Port Elizabeth Airport, or continue on with your self drive rental. (B)
