The trains travel comfortably and securely during the night
to the next stop on the itinerary and you awake each morning
to a fresh vista on Africa and the anticipation of new and
exciting adventures. In this way Shongololo guests can make
the most of every precious holiday hour.
Each train carries a fleet of air-conditioned Mercedes Benz
touring vehicles with professional guides on board (English,
German, Dutch or French speaking) who are ready to take
guests on inclusive scheduled off-rail activities to
experience the unique sights of the area. For the more
adventurous there are also specialized activities from
ballooning, to elephant riding to scuba diving available at
many locations.
The chefs offer South African menus that include Cape Dutch
and Malay recipes as well as authentic African dishes. Meals
are complemented by a selection of delightful and
distinguished South African wines. It is the aim and the
pleasure of every staff member on board to provide you with
friendly and efficient service.
Each train has its own bar, dining and accommodation
carriages. As in any hotel, bedding and towels are provided
and cabins are serviced daily.
Cabins have ample storage space and closets are equipped
with both hangers and shelving. All passenger compartments
have hand basins and running water. Power is 220v AC and
European plug adaptors are provided. In addition, there is
an onboard laundry service.

In The Tracks of Dr Livingstone
Shongololo African Train Cruise
16 Days/15 Nights
Shongololo Express proudly introduces their Premier trip
into some of the most beautiful and historically rich
destinations in Southern Africa.
This unique rail journey takes you to see many of the
sights that astounded the 19th century explorer, Dr.
David Livingstone.
The route covers over 4000 kilometres through north
eastern South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Tanzania with
visits to Victoria Falls and some of the most beautiful
and important game sanctuaries in Africa.
DAY 1: JOHANNESBURG (D)
Touring around Johannesburg. Visit Newtown and
Constitution Hill, the only prison to have held both
Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Ghandi. The train departs
this afternoon.
DAY 2. ON THE RAILS TO
SOMABHULA (BD)
Cross into Zimbabwe and spend the day travelling to
Somabhula.
DAY 3. SOMABHULA (BD)
Walk with the lions in Antelope Park and visit Nalatale
Ruins, a striking example of the country's Iron Age
sites with excellent rock paintings.
DAY 4. ON THE RAILS TO
VICTORIA FALLS
The train will continue today as far as Victoria Falls.
DAY 5. VICTORIA FALLS &
LIVINGSTONE (BD)
Visit the Victoria Falls rain forest in Zimbabwe before
crossing the famous bridge into Zambia. View the 'Falls
from Zambia before continuing to Livingstone.
DAY 6. ON THE RAILS TO
LUSAKA (BD)
The train will continue today to Lusaka.
DAY 7. LUSAKA - SOUTH
LUANGWA NATIONAL PARK (BD)
Two days and an overnight will be spent in the South
Luangwa National Park.
DAY 8. SOUTH LUANGWA
NATIONAL PARK (BD)
A second day in the South Luangwa National Park.
DAY 9. SERENJE/LIVINGSTONE
MEMORIAL/KUNDALILA FALLS (BD)
Visit the place where Dr Livingstone died and the
Kundalila Falls before the train continues to the
Tanzanian border.
DAY 10. ON THE RAILS TO
MAKAMBAKO (BD)
The train will continue today to Makambako.
DAY 11. CROSS INTO
TANZANIA - MAKAMBAKO
Visit the Isimila Stone Age site and the town of Iringa.
DAY 12. SCENIC
ESCARPMENT DROP (BD)
Our train journey today will include the spectacular
drop down the escarpment, and the Selous Game Reserve.
DAY 13. SELOUS (BD)
A day in Africa's largest game reserve.
DAY 14. SELOUS OVERNIGHT
TO DAR ES SALAAM (BD)
A second day in the Selous Game Reserve. Travel
overnight to Dar es Salaam
DAY 15. DAR ES SALAAM
TO BAGAMOYO (BD)
Visit Bagamoyo, closest port to the Island of Zanzibar
and an old slave port.
